DETROIT (WWJ) - Frustrated residents at a subsidized senior living complex in Detroit are airing their grievances after the elevators broke down again
The elevators at Greenhouse Apartments, a 10-floor, around 200-unit complex on the Southfield Service Drive near McNichol's, haven't been functioning properly for about eight months, according to several people talking to WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton on Monday.
On top of that, residents told Langton there's a bedbug problem in the building.
Rich Lane, a double amputee, said he lives on the first floor so it's doing OK. But he feels bad for his neighbors on the upper floors.
"We got a lot of residents that need to get out and about to get to their doctors appointments, and they're trapped up on their floor," Lane said. "It's like they don't care and like they got us living in a death trap."
Benjamin Young, 77, said he needs those elevators working.
"It's absolutely terrible. I don't feel like walking up the steps because my thighs hurt from the last time," Young said.
Michael Greenyard, who's 64 years old and on dialysis. He said the bedbug problem has not been sufficiently dealt with.
"They're still here!" he told Langton. "They told me they cleared me, when the bedbugs people left. They said you're clear. The next day, I got bedbugs."
WWJ spoke to apartment management on Monday and they say they are aware of the issues in the building, and are working to fix them as quickly as possible.
