(WWJ) — A road worker has died after he was hit by a car on I-75 in Detroit, Wednesday afternoon.

The tragic crash happened around 1:40 p.m. on Nov. 6, in the work zone on southbound I-75 near Springwells. It left a mess for Metro Detroit drivers as the freeway was closed for several hours during the afternoon commute while Michigan State Police investigated.

Officials said a 53-year-old Lincoln Park man on a moving roadwork crew was setting a flare pattern between two construction vehicles in the right lane when he was hit by a Kia sedan, driven by a 71-year-old Allen Park man.

The worker, whose name has not been released, was rushed to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition and later died.

Southbound I-75 remained closed at I-96 for about five hours.

Officials said the driver stopped at the scene of the crash.

“We want to remind drivers to move over when they see construction vehicles on the side or in the roadway working,” said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw.

While Shaw said an investigator's report will be submitted to the prosecutor's office once the investigation is complete, it was not clear what charges the driver may face.

Authorities have not said what caused the driver to enter the right lane prior to hitting the worker.
