(WWJ) — Charges are pending after a road rage incident on the freeway near Detroit Metro Airport led to a crash and violence.

It all began around 5:45 p.m. Saturday, according to Michigan State Police, when Romulus police got word of a road rage incident on I-275 near Eureka Road.

Two drivers were headed south on I-275, just south of I-94, when they “began driving aggressively with each other,” MSP officials said.

Both drivers kept escalating the situation when one of them, a 23-year-old Dearborn man, pointed a gun at a 22-year-old Romulus man, according to MSP.

The driver from Romulus then began following the other driver and they both got off the freeway at Sibley Road.

The Romulus driver allegedly cut in front of the armed driver and slammed on the brakes, causing a crash, officials said.

The 22-year-old driver and his passenger, an 18-year-old from Van Buren Township, got out and “started damaging the other vehicle,” according to MSP.  The other man then pointed his handgun at the two suspects damaging his car.

Police eventually stopped the incident and those involved were turned over to MSP troopers.

Officials say the suspect who pointed the gun had a valid CPL.

Authorities are still investigating the incident and will send the final report to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s to review for possible charges.

“Another example of two adults who could not handle the responsibility of driving.” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on X, formerly Twitter. “Then to make it worse, they couldn’t de-escalate and put other drivers in danger by driving recklessly and involving a handgun. We are very lucky that no one was hurt.”
