The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) says don't eat Tanimura & Antle romaine lettuce packed as single heads due to E. coli concerns.

MDARD said a sample of the lettuce, collected at a Walmart just outside Kalamazoo, tested positive for the bacteria. Further analysis found the strain of E. coli identified on the roughage was "highly genetically related" to two illnesses reported in Michigan.

The lettuce was sold in a zip-top clear bag with a blue label and white lettering. It has the UPC Number 0-27918-20314-9 and a white sticker saying it was packaged in Salinas, California on October 15, 2020.

Symptoms of this particular strand of E. coli (Shiga toxin-producing, or SHEC) vary for each person, but often include stomach cramps, a mild fever, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. Most people recover within a week, but for others, the complications can be severe or even life threatening.

If you or your family have eaten this lettuce, watch out for symptoms and immediately call your doctor if they appear.

MDARD said throw out this product, if you have bought it, or return it to the store.
