Romulus man convicted in crash that injured Eastern Market CEO, killed his wife

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Romulus man could spend more than 15 years in prison after being found guilty of killing the wife of Eastern Market CEO, Dan Carmody, while driving while intoxicated.

Jacob Mraulak was convicted by a Wayne County jury on Monday on multiple charges connected to last year's crash.


At around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, authorities said 68-year-old Vivian Carmody and her husband were walking dinner in the area of St. Aubin and Lafayette when they were hit by a car.

Police said Mraulak was under the influence of drugs and alcohol ,and was driving the wrong way on Lafayette when he veered up onto the sidewalk, hitting the victims before crashing into a tree.

Police said Mraulak was overdosing, and was given a dose of Narcan at the scene to save his life.

Vivian Carmody died at the hospital, while her husband underwent surgery for serious injuries he sustained in the crash.

Mraulak was convicted on the following counts: Operating a vehicle under the influence causing death, reckless driving causing death, operating under the influence causing serious injury, and reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function, according to online court records.

Mraulk is scheduled to be sentenced on October 18.
