TROY (WWJ) -- A Romulus man is facing possible jailtime after police say he drove drunk in Oakland County, crashing his car into a light pole.

This happened the night of July 7, according to Troy Police, along Coolidge Highway near E. Maple Rd. in Troy.

At around 10:40 p.m., police said officers responding to reports of a crash found a 2017 Kia Soul against a light pole in the center median, with heavy crash damage and the airbag deployed.

The driver fled the scene on foot, but was quickly located by officers walking northbound on Coolidge, north of Maple, police said.

While speaking with the driver, identified as a 48-year-old Romulus man, officers "observed him to be highly intoxicated," according to a police report.

The driver was asked to perform several sobriety evaluations but he refused to comply, police said, and then tested at .25% BAC on a preliminary breath test. That's more than three times the legal limit to drive under Michigan law.

The driver was arrested and booked in the Troy Police lock-up where officials said he refused to submit to a chemical breath test.

During an inventory search of the Kia, officers said they found an open bottle of vodka.

A search warrant was granted, the man's blood was drawn, and he was charged with Operating While Intoxicated 3rd Offense, as well as Driving While License Suspended – Revoked - Denied 2nd Offense, Failure to Report Accident, and Open Alcohol Container in a Vehicle, police said.

A third OWI offense is a felony, which is punishable by anywhere from 30 days up to a year in jail.

The driver's name was not immediately released.
