A Royal Oak man involved in a standoff with police over the weekend has died.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Department says 35-year old Jason Sugg was shot by a SWAT Team officer Saturday night after pointing his gun at officers at a home on Oliver Street. Police say Sugg beat up his father before barricading himself in his home for about six hours. The Sheriff's Department's investigation is ongoing.

The barricaded gunman was pronounced deceased by a physician at William Beaumont Hospital at 6:15 a.m. today after undergoing surgery.

Police said the incident began when they were called to a home on Oliver Street, near Crooks and Webster, for a domestic dispute.

The 34-year old suspect had a gun, was wearing body armor and threatened to shoot officers. Royal Oak police say negotiations to get the man to surrender peacefully were on and off until around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. That's when he allegedly put on a gas mask and then went to the front of the house and pointed his rifle at officers. He was shot.

Residents in the area were told to stay inside and lock their doors during the dramatic stand-off. That shelter-in-place order has been lifted.
