(WWJ) - Snow showers mixed with rain is expected to impact the evening commute on Tuesday and create slushy conditions Wednesday morning as Metro Detroit braces for its first big plunge into winter.

An upper level low pressure system is expected to expand across the Great Lakes region Tuesday, brining with it the season's first accumulating snowfall.

Outside the WWJ studios, snow is already falling.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean DeVore says residents in Southeast Michigan can expect to see light flurries on and off starting Tuesday morning as temperatures hover around freezing before rain is added into the mix.

"Temperatures will be getting up into the upper 30s to near 40 and then it settles back within a few degrees of freezing tonight as it will be cold," DeVore forecasted. "There will be some periods of snow mixed in with rain at times, especially in the city and near the suburbs."

DeVore said areas in and around Metro Detroit could see an inch or so of snow, while places in the Thumb area could see 3 to 4 inches.

The potential for snowfall accumulations of 2 to 3 inches, mainly on grassy surfaces, cannot be ruled out in localized areas by Wednesday morning.

Scattered lake effect snow with rain and snow showers are forecasted to impact the Tri Cities and Thumb area Wednesday until the low pressure system moves out.

It's a stark contrast to unseasonably warm temperatures seen in Michigan last week. Thursday's temperatures alone set new record highs in multiple cities across the state before a rush of colder air swept through the eastern half of the country and plummeted highs into the 30s.

For this Thursday, Nov. 17, meteorologists say it will be rather cloudy with brisk, cold temperatures only reaching 38 for a daytime high.

Friday will be blustery and even colder, with a couple of snow showers around. The high is forecasted at 31.
