ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - A suspicious device found in a parking structure at the Detroit Zoo caused a brief closure on Saturday afternoon before police cleared the scene, authorities stated.

According to an update from the Detroit Zoological Society on social media, the device was discovered by officials during a routine security check around 1:20 p.m. in a parking garage on zoo property.

"As the safety of our guests, staff, volunteers and the animals who call the Zoo home is of the utmost importance, we immediately closed the parking structure and contacted our law enforcement partners to conduct a full investigation," the zoo said.

Upon their investigation, officials determined there was no threat to the staff, guests or animals on the zoo's 125-acre property.

The scene was cleared around 3 p.m. and the parking structure was reopened to the public.

Officials did not state what kind of device was located in their update, but thanked park patrons for their understanding as the incident unfolded.

"We are grateful to our municipal partners for their quick response and to our guests for their patience," the zoo added.

No other details were released.
