A school bus traveling down a pothole-ridden road went into a ditch Tuesday morning after the road collapsed, according to the Huron Township Public Safety Department.
The accident happened just after 8:30 a.m. near Clark and Judd roads.
The students on the bus were evacuated. Three students complained of minor injuries and were evaluated by emergency crews before they were released to their parents. The others on the bus were either released to their parents or transferred to another bus and taken to school.
No other injuries were reported.
The bus driver was going at an appropriate speed and while driving on the right side of the road to avoid large potholes, the road gave out and caused the driver to go into the ditch, according to investigators.
“As always, with student safety first in all our minds, the Huron School District worked with us to make sure we had all the necessary information to conduct our investigation," Everette Robbins, Huron Township Director of Public Safety said in a statement.
"The interior camera of the bus was quickly reviewed, and the actions of the driver appear to have been appropriate. The driver was not texting or in violation of the hands-free law prior to the accident. This appears to simply be a case of the road being soft and the driver took the appropriate actions to do what she could to avoid something worse. We are thankful that all our kids are safe.”
The Wayne County Roads division has been notified about the road conditions in the area. A message seeking information about repairs has been sent. We are awaiting information.
