LIVONIA (WWJ) - Thieves who attempted to rob a Livonia gun shop overnight are on the run Thursday morning after they failed to gain entry,
WWJ's Mike Campbell reported live from the scene at Uncoiled Firearms and Gun Range in Livonia on Schoolcraft Road between Middlebelt and Merriman where just after midnight, police said three suspects tried to break into the shop.
According to the Livonia Police Department, the trio broke a window in an attempt to get inside, but they were unsuccessful.
"Not the first time that they've had an attempted break in owner Joel Swisher says this is attempt number three," Campbell reported.
Swisher said he's positive they were after firearms.
"I would imagine they were after firearms.. probably anything they could grab for use or for sale... sell them on the streets for about the same price that we sell them here in the store," Swisher added.
Campbell said if the thieves had managed to swipe any guns, they could avoid the legal way of selling them by cutting out the need for background checks -- therefore making it easier for those with criminal backgrounds to get one.
The Livonia police said the three subjects left the scene in a stolen white Kia Soul with a Michigan license plate #ALT 8292.
Anyone with any information about the incident has been asked to called the Livonia Police Department at (734) 466-2470.
