Search resumes for kayaker who went missing in Lake Erie off Monroe County beach over Labor Day weekend

(WWJ) – The search for a kayaker who went missing on Lake Erie in Monroe County over Labor Day weekend resumed on Monday.

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies and the Frenchtown Township Fire Department were called to Lakeshore Drive in Grand Beach around 3:45 p.m. Sunday after the kayaker went missing.

Witnesses told authorities they saw the kayaker in the water struggling to stay afloat, according to the sheriff’s office.

First responders were unable to locate the missing kayaker when they showed up. Authorities believe they may have gone under water about 400 yards from shore.

Officials have not released the name, age or hometown of the missing person.

An extensive underwater search was called off around 11 p.m. Sunday and it resumed early Monday morning.

As of noon Monday, officials told WWJ the kayaker had not been found. A patrol boat was in the area and a dive team would be activated if any evidence was found.
