Semi-truck crashes through I-94 guard rail, flips onto Merriman Road near Detroit Metro Airport

ROMULUS (WWJ) — Police and first responders are on the scene after a semi-truck drove off I-94 and onto Merriman Road near Detroit Metro Airport Tuesday afternoon.

It happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. on I-94 at Merriman, one of the busiest exit ramps for airport traffic.

Officials with the city of Romulus said on Facebook the truck, which was carrying water, ran off the freeway and ended up on Merriman. Michigan State Police officials said the semi driver lost control of the truck, crashed into the center median guard rail and continued down onto Merriman.

The semi then hit the median divider wall on Merriman the trailer overturned. A photo posted to the MSP Second District X page showed a the semi cab heavily damaged, the median wall on Merriman obliterated and debris all over the road.

The driver only sustained minor injuries and was evaluated at the scene, MSP officials said.

Merriman Road is closed in both directions at I-94 (south of Smith and north of the airport) as crews investigate and clean up the wreckage. MSP officials expect it will remain closed for several hours.

As of 5:20 p.m., WWJ's Tim Pamplin reported the semi had been removed from the scene, but crews were continuing to fix the median wall. Merriman remained closed, as of 7 p.m.

Drivers heading to the airport are recommended to use I-275/Eureka Road to get to DTW.
