DETROIT (WWJ) -- The driver of a semi-truck may have been intoxicated when he was caught on camera firing several shots at another car on I-96 after the two vehicles crashed into one another on a Detroit side street.
Just before midnight on Sunday, state troopers responded to calls about an incident involving a semi-truck and a firearm on eastbound I-96 near MLK Jr. Blvd.
Based on their preliminary investigation, Michigan State Police believe there was a collision between a car and a semi-truck on Wayburn St. in Detroit.
The car then allegedly followed the semi for several miles, at which point the semi driver pulled out a weapon and shot at the car multiple times.
Authorities say the semi truck eventually broke down and stopped. The semi's driver -- a 37-year-old Georgia man -- left the scene, but later returned. He was met by MSP officers, who took him into custody.
Following the arrest, a canine unit was brought out and recovered a pistol a short distance from the semi. Eastbound I-96 was also closed at I-94 for a shell casing search, but is now back open.
Further investigation also revealed that the driver of the car had captured the incident with a cell phone camera.
All current evidence has been turned over to a prosecutor to review, and MSP detectives continue to look into the crash and shooting.
MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw also reminded drivers to call police after a crash and that it is never safe to follow the other person.
"You never know the state of mind of the other driver and what they might do," said Shaw. "We were lucky no one was hurt in this crash and shooting."
