DETROIT (WWJ) - A jackknifed semi is continuing to cause headaches for drivers in southwest Detroit after troopers say the driver was speeding in rainy conditions on Tuesday morning before crashing on I-75.
"Just another example of a driver going too fast and putting other drivers at risk," Michigan State Police 1st Lt. Mike Shaw said in a social media update about the wreck that occurred around 3:35 a.m. on northbound I-75 near Fort Street.
According to Shaw, troopers were called out to the scene after reports of a jackknifed semi came through to the Detroit Regional Communication Center.
The area was bottlenecked for several hours during the morning commute as authorities investigated the crash and crews worked to clean chucks of debris that littered both sides of the freeway.
Based on their preliminary investigation, troopers found the semi truck driver was traveling too fast for road conditions and lost control, slamming into the median wall.
The force of the crash ejected debris across the northbound and southbound lanes and struck several vehicles, but no injuries were reported, troopers said.
Multiple lanes on both sides of the freeway were closed as officials cleared the scene. While the semi was towed and all lanes are back open as of 8 a.m., the going is still slow for drivers as traffic works its way through.
Shaw said the semi truck driver was completely at-fault for the crash.
"It is pretty simple, just slow down in the rain," the 1st Lt. stated. "We continue to see these risky driving behaviors causing preventable crashes."
