WHITE LAKE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Authorities investigating a series of explosions that shook homes in White Lake Township on Friday evening suspect they came from a nearby oil drilling site.
White Lake Township Police told WWJ that their suspicion has not yet been confirmed, but it is believed that vents and canisters that regulate airflow to an underground gas line exploded at the site along Young Road and Bogie Lake Road, near M-59, just before 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 25.
Fire crews from Highland Township, Commerce Township, Waterford, Springfield Township, Milford and the Oakland County Hazardous Materials Response Team all responded to the fossil fuel recovery plant, owned and operated by Hound Resources.
Upon arrival, they found a heavy fire on the north side of the property near two large storage vessels.
Crews worked the scene for several hours, but where able to extinguish the blaze without further issues.
In a Saturday afternoon update, police said the incident is still under investigation and no cause has yet been definitively determined.
"Regardless of what is being posted on social media, there has been no recent hostile fires at this location," police added.
Residents reported two loud explosions that shook homes in the area.
Photos and video of large plumes of smoke and a large fire that could be seen for miles flooded social media shortly after the reported explosions.
Police confirmed emergency crews were at the scene of an "incident." Bogie Lake Road from Highland Road to Biscayne Boulevard closed as personnel responded to the area.
At this time, there are no reports of injuries. A series of air tests were being conducted on Friday evening, police added.
Authorities are asking residents and motorists to stay clear of the area until further notice.
An update on the incident is expected to be released as more information becomes available.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy has been notified.
