DETROIT (WWJ) Severe storms are on the way to Metro Detroit, with potential snow showers predicted for the first day of spring.

While temperatures are in the seventies Wednesday; Accuweather predicts the mercury will drop to the forties as the storms roll in overnight between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., with the possibility of gusts of up to 60 miles per hour.

CHECK THE ACCUWEATHER FORECAST

“The complex part of the forecast is that storms are going to be moving into southeast Michigan after dark, so there’s going to be a battle occurring between the intensity of the storm and its ability to produce severe weather,” National Weather Service Detroit Meteorologist Bryan Tilley told WWJ’s Luke Sloan. “So, they will be… on a weakening trend as they move into southeast Michigan and Detroit Metro Area.”

Tilley added the storms may still produce “potentially damaging wind gusts”, hail and the “remote possibility” of a tornado.

“We can’t rule (the tornado) out,” Tilley said.

Though Thursday marks the first day of spring, snow is also a possibility, forecasters said.

“Winter is battling to hold on, and spring is battling to take over,” Tilley said.

The lower pressure system will move into Ontario, followed by cold air, leading to the possibility of a rain/snow mix for the listening area on Thursday afternoon; Tilley said.

However, because temperatures are not dropping below freezing (upper 30s), Tilley said accumulation is unlikely.
