Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for Southeast Michigan until 9PM Friday, with 60 mph winds and lightning possible

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Forecasters say strong winds, hail and frequent lightening are possible with thunderstorms expected in Metro Detroit Friday evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for a large chunk of Lower Michigan, as well as parts of Indiana and Ohio, in effect until 9 p.m. on June 27.

This area includes all of Southeast Michigan and the WWJ listening area, including Bay, Genesee, Huron, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Midland, Monroe, Oakland, Saginaw, Sanilac, Shiawassee, St. Clair, Tuscola, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for northwestern Oakland County was canceled.

In Metro Detroit overall, NWS said there's a "Slight Risk" (2 out of 5) for severe weather Friday between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday. The most likely severe weather threat will be damaging wind gusts to 60 mph and localized flash flooding.

NWS said torrential rainfall could occur with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding, warning: "Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways."
