SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) -- Shelby Township Police arrested a man accused of stealing a dozen propane tanks.
Nathanael Mangold was arraigned on Tuesday, Aug. 19, on a charge of Felony Larceny of over $1,000 but less than $20,000.
Police said an officer identified Mangold's vehicle while using a Flock Camera System — which uses AI to identify vehicle features and license plates.
Shelby Township officers turned the case over to the detective bureau for follow up. An officer also initially learned of the missing propane tanks by viewing Flock surveillance video, police said.
Further investigation revealed Mangold was linked "several other propane tank thefts" within the past weeks, according to police.
Detectives located Mangold and conducted a traffic stop.
Police said officers took him into custody without incident.
Mangold was released on a personal bond, following his initial court appearance.
“Our officers and detectives worked quickly and effectively, and the FLOCK camera system played a key role in solving these four separate cases," Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide said, in a statement. "Technology like this allows us to identify suspects faster, recover stolen property and ultimately keep our community."
