(WWJ) A shelter in place has been lifted for a Royal Oak neighborhood in the area of Webster and Crooks as a a barricaded gunman situation has come to an end.
Police say the situation stemmed from a "violent domestic dispute" between a father and his son, 34, Saturday afternoon. Investigators told WWJ they arrived at a home on Oliver (2700 block) to find the son heavily intoxicated, wearing body armor and barricaded in the home with a gun.
Officers heard "multiple gunshots coming from inside the house and (saw) several rounds going through the window."
"During lengthy negotiations, the suspect made repeated attempts to shoot officers and stated he 'rigged' the doors to prevent officers from entering," a Royal Oak Police press release read.
The Oakland County SWAT Team arrived on scene around 4:00 p.m. They continued to attempt negotiations and had "intermittent contact with the suspect."
Following about two hours, the SWAT team used a drone and a SWAT robot to search the house. The suspect somehow disabled the drone and donned a gas mask.
Around 8:30 p.m., the suspect appeared near the front of the house and pointed his rifle at deputies. A member of the SWAT team shot him.
He is hospitalized. His condition is unknown.
Residents in the immediate area of Oliver, Galpin, Glenview, and Glenwood were initially told to lock their doors, stay away from windows and go into the basement if possible.
The shelter in place is now over.
