DETRIOT (WWJ) - A woman riding in the back of her Uber on I-94 in Detroit sustained multiple gunshot wounds in a drive-by shooting early Friday morning, Michigan State Police said.

As of 8:45 a.m., troopers have reopened the freeway nearly three hours after all westbound lanes were closed just before Livernois.

According to MSP, the alleged shooting occurred right after 5:30 a.m. and troopers arrived to find a 34-year-old female with multiple gunshot wounds. A tourniquet was applied to her leg and she was rushed to the hospital.

First Lt. Mike Shaw said it took a while to determine what happened due to a language barrier between state police and the driver of the victim vehicle. A member of the state police's translator team arrived and assisted with the investigation.

Troopers were able to determine the 34-year-old woman was picked up by an Uber from her home in Detroit not long before the incident. The woman was sitting in the rear of the rideshare when a dark colored sedan came up beside them and began firing shots.

While the woman was hit, the Uber driver was not harmed.

"Members of our Freeway Investigative Support Team are just starting their investigation," Shaw stated. "Currently the motive behind the shooting is unknown, but we hope to narrow that down as we speak with the victims."

State police serached the freeway and were able to recover several spent casings.

Additional details are expected to be released at a later time.
