DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit police on shut down at least five blocks of Martin Luther King Blvd. in Southwest Detroit and detained several suspects in connection with an early morning shooting in which an alleged car thief fired on a Dearborn officer.

WWJ's Charlie Langton was on the scene early Monday, where police barred off MLK Blvd near West Grand Blvd and Roosevelt St., just west of I-96.

According to Langton, a Dearborn officer was surveilling a stolen vehicle in the area of MLK Blvd and Roosevelt St. At around 6 a.m., at least one suspect fired several gunshots into the police vehicle.

The suspect(s) then fled on foot and were believed to still be in the area.

Fortunately, the Dearborn officer was not injured.

Langton reported a significant police presence but no S.W.A.T. team or crisis negotiators, saying that it was not a barricade situation.

As of 9 a.m., DPD had detained several suspects, but the area is still under investigation.

This is a developing story. WWJ will have the latest updates as more information becomes available. >>LISTEN LIVE
