DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit's gunshot detection system alerted police to a shooting on the city's eastside Wednesday morning, with cops ultimately finding a deceased victim with multiple gunshot wounds.
Detroit police officers are at the scene at intersection of Chalmers Street and Cedargrove Street, near Gratiot, where WWJ"s Charlie Langton reports the body is still in the road as police piece together what happened.
"We got report that somebody was shot," Langton said. "We're don't know the circumstances The body is on the street here... the Detroit police doing their investigation now."
Both streets have been blocked off as Detroit homicide officers process the scene, Langton said. The victim is being described as an unknown male in his 40s or 50s -- he was shot multiple times.
Details surrounding the shooting remain unclear, Langton said, but police were made aware of the incident around 3:30 a.m. by the city's controversial ShotSpotter technology -- no 911 call was placed, Langton reported.
ShotSpotter is an aerial gunfire detection system that uses sensors to pinpoint the locations of gunshot activity. The technology is currently in use within the 8th and 9th Precincts, covering close to seven square miles.
The city voted just Tuesday to postpone a vote on a $7 million expansion of the program, but opted to renew the current system through 2023, WWJ's Jon Hewitt reported.
If the city votes to approve the expansion, the technology would cover 28 square miles.
Meanwhile, Detroit Police are searching for tips from the community to help solve Tuesday's fatal shooting. The department's main line can be reached at 313-596-5200.
