DETROIT (WWJ) — Tickets were set to go on-sale Tuesday for the grand reopening celebration of Michigan Central Station.

It appears that demand for the tickets is so high that the website crashed as they were made available to the public at noon Tuesday.

Michigan Central Station was built in 1913, once serving as a transportation hub for the city of Detroit. Ford has restored the once dilapidated building in Corktown, turning it into a new “mobility innovation hub.”

Officials are planning to host “Live from Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central” on June 6, followed by more than a week of open houses, June 7-16 to give the public a first look at the station’s ground floor.

Officials said on the Michigan Central Facebook page they “appreciate everyone’s excitement to participate in our Michigan Central OPEN celebration,” but registration for both events had to be temporarily paused on Tuesday due to “overwhelming demand.”

Officials said tickets have not sold out and they will share a new date and time for ticket availability soon. The website for tickets (once it's up and running again) is michigancentral.com.

Ford is transforming the station into a new mobility innovation hub that will not only serve as a key working place for the future of the auto industry, but a gathering place for the community, complete with restaurants, retail and a renovated public park.

WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert got a tour of the building’s progress in the summer of 2022 to see how it transitioned from an eyesore to a gem.
