DETROIT (WWJ) – Though winter took its time getting to the metro Detroit area, it arrived with a bang to start the New Year.
A snow storm rolled into Southeast Michigan on Saturday as we turned the calendar to January, bringing several inches of snow to most areas and leaving roads in rough condition Sunday morning.
While a winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service expired at 10 a.m. many people were still digging out of their driveways, brushing off their cars and trying to take it easy on the roadways.
There were several crashes across metro Detroit freeways on Sunday morning. WWJ Traffic's Marty Bufalini reported issues along most major freeways, including I-696, I-75, I-94, M-10 and others.
He says even though the snow may have seemed to reduced by late morning, it was too late -- roads were already a mess.
"They're snowy, icy, slushy, you have to look out for black ice," he said. "If you have to go out at all, you need to give yourself a lot of time because you will not be able to do -- should not do -- the speed limit. It's just too dangerous out there."
Earlier in the morning, many freeway lanes remained only partially visible.

Most areas in metro Detroit saw between 2-4 inches of snowfall overnight, though some places saw slightly higher.
Wixom, White Lake, Berkley and Milford all saw 3 inches or more, while most areas south and west of Detroit saw 1.5-2.5 inches.
Further east of the city, the likes of Grosse Pointe and New Baltimore saw over 4 inches and up north, the Flint area approached 5 inches.
A full snowfall report can be found on the National Weather Service’s website.
AccuWeather meteorologist John Feerick tells WWJ there may be some "leftover flurries" throughout a "brisk and cold" Sunday afternoon. The high temperature is expected to be 26, while clear skies will allow the low temperature to drop to 12 degrees Sunday night.
