Soggy, not snowy, start to A.M. commute as temperatures continue to flit above freezing – so when will we see snow?

METRO DETROIT (WWJ) - Old Man Winter is once again toying with Metro Detroiters as a heavy snow forecasted to impact Tuesday's morning commute seemingly failed to show up.

But, residents should still be prepared as rain could switch over to wet snow at a moment's notice while another, larger storm is predicted to hit the area over the weekend.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for all of Southeast Michigan until 11:00 a.m. with the National Weather Service warning that snow can still intensify through the morning commute with rates in excess of a half inch per hour at times.

Whether residents see snow or rain -- or a wintery mix -- will vary greatly from location to location due to temperatures struggling to stay below or at freezing.

But for areas that get snow, expect quick and heavy accumulation.

"Snow will intensify this morning through the morning commute with rates in excess of a half inch per hour at times," NWS warned. "Snow covered roadways and rapid fluctuations in visibility will impact the morning commute."

WWJ AccuWeather Meteorlogist Dean DeVore said snow has been moving up through the Downriver communities with temperaures between 33 and 37 degrees.

"I do think there's a couple hour period here... where it will snow a little heavier," DeVore told WWJ's Jonathan Carlson. "Now, those temperatures I don't think will drop much, if at all here, probably stay right around 32-33. But I think we could see some slushy, slippery roads for a time this morning."

Temperatures will continue to rise into the lower 40s as rain takes over most of Southeast Michigan between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. After nightfall, rain could transition back to snow as temps slide back into the mid-30s.

The combination with strong wind gusts up to 35 mph could result in some downed tree limbs and sporadic power outages, before rising temperatures will cause snow to change to rain by late morning, NWS predicted.

It will remain windy Tuesday evening, AccuWeather says, with rain transitioning to snow as temps slide back into the mid-30s.

DeVore said small lull and colder weather is on deck over the next few days as yet another system is predicted to sweep into the area by the weekend.

"A storm a lot like this and maybe even worse because I think this next storm Friday into Saturday has a bigger potential to give us snow on the back end with the potential for blizzard conditions," DeVore explained. "Strong winds and gusty snow that's heavy at times -- that's Friday night into Saturday. So keep it locked as a 12-punch of winter comes here to us here in Metro Detroit."
