CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) – Family members say the condition of the son of WWJ anchor Jim Matthews continues to improve in the days after the attack that left Matthews dead and his children and girlfriend injured.

The family says 10-year-old Hunter, who suffered severe blunt force trauma when he was hit in the head with a hammer during the attack last Friday in Chesterfield Township, is now off the ventilator and making progress.

He also opened his eyes and was able to squeeze a hand on command on Tuesday.

Family members previously reported that the boy had undergone successful surgery on his head, while tests and scans have determined that his neck is okay. A cervical collar has been removed and he can move both sides of his body, but the road to recovery remains a long one.

Matthews' girlfriend, Hunter's mom, remains hospitalized in stable condition, while his 5-year-old daughter has been released.

Authorities on Monday charged 55-year-old Arthur Williamson with seven felonies, including first-degree murder. Many details surrounding the case remain unclear, including the suspect's relationship with the family and the timeline of events.

Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido noted more charges may be forthcoming, as the investigation is still ongoing and evidence is being processed.

A GoFundMe page organized by the children's aunt has raised more than $16,000, with all money going towards helping the kids. Donations can be made here.
