FLAT ROCK (WWJ) — An Oakland County man is in trouble with the law after speeding away from a traffic stop and leading police on a multi-county chase that topped out at well over 100 mph last weekend.

It all began around 3 a.m. Saturday when a Flat Rock police officer pulled the driver over for multiple traffic violations in the area of southbound I-75 and Gibraltar Road.

As the officer spoke with the driver of a Ford Fusion and returned to his patrol car with the suspect’s driver’s license, the 46-year-old South Lyon man sped away from the traffic stop, according to Flat Rock police.

A chase ensued, with the driver reaching speeds upwards of 120-130 mph, according to police.

The officer eventually cut the chase short near Exit 9 on SB I-75, due to the high speeds, as well as already having a positive ID of the driver, officials said.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, which had been assisting on the case, had multiple units in the area at the time. Deputies soon spotted the suspect’s Ford on the shoulder near Exit 2, and saw a man matching the suspect’s description fleeing into the woods.

Deputies were able to use a K9 unit to track the suspect in the woods. He was arrested without incident and turned over to Flat Rock police. No injuries were reported to the suspect or any law enforcement officers.

The case has been forwarded to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. The suspect, whose name has not been released, is expected to be charged with one count of fourth-degree fleeing and eluding police, a two-year felony.
