SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WWJ) -- The "all clear" has been given at a Southfield hotel after what was believed to be a possible hazmat situation turned out to be harmless.
The Southfield Fire Department was called to the Hawthorn Suites on Northwestern Highway around 9 a.m. Wednesday after someone reported what was believed to be a chemical spill in one of the units.
The hotel was partially evacuated as crews investigated.
Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren says people inside the building were concerned that the strong smell meant someone in the hotel was cooking meth.
It turns out there was a chemical at the source of the smell -- but it wasn't meth.
Someone was warming hair dye products.
Barren says they still did the right thing by reporting what they thought was suspicious behavior and crews had to take the matter seriously.
"When you get information that there may be a meth lab in the making, you want to take all precautions for the safety of the community and our first responders," Barren told WWJ.
Crews were on the scene for more than two hours, according to Barren.
Fire Chief Johnny Menifee told WWJ earlier in the day that someone had been treated and released for non-life threatening injuries. He did not specify what those injuries were.
