SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- The cities of Southfield and Lathrup Village have launched a petition get answers from DTE Energy about the recent excessive power outages.
Metro Detroit residents and businesses are being encouraged to sign and share the MoveOn.org petition to demand increased infrastructure investment and maintenance.
“DTE Energy must improve their electrical system and customer service by investing in their infrastructure, equipment, personnel, training and routine maintenance,” Southfield Mayor Dr. Ken Siver said. “The increased frequency and duration of these power outages is simply unacceptable.”
“It is essential that this sole source provider become more concerned with their service delivery and performance over their profits,” added Council President Linnie Taylor. “It is long past time for DTE to make lasting improvements to their system that will be measurable, sustainable and reliable.”
The aim of the petition is to get DTE to explain why Southfield, Lathrup Village and other southeast Michigan communities have been experiencing such frequent and long-lasting power outages following heavy storms this summer.
They also want the utility to outline the steps they are taking to prevent future power outages.
“While we all understand that severe weather can significantly impact the electrical system and drain valuable energy company resources,” the petition reads, “the frequency and duration of these outages must be addressed and improved.”
The petition comes as the Michigan League of Conservation Voters (MLCV) is calling for the Michigan Public Service Commission and the Legislature to conduct oversight hearings on the failures by DTE and Consumers Energy to prevent outages and reconnect customers following this year's summer storms.
