SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- A heads-up for drivers in Oakland County: A major road construction project is getting underway that will effect hundreds of drivers in Southfield each day.
Craig Bryson with the Road Commission for Oakland County say crews on Monday, April 29, will begin resurfacing a mile-long stretch of Southfield Road, between 11 Mile and 12 Mile roads.
"The means milling, or grinding off the existing pavement, and putting a new asphalt surface on that road," he explained. "So, it'll be a nice, new, smooth asphalt surface on the road between 11 and 12 Mile Road."
While one lane of Southfield Road will remain open in both directions, traffic is expected to be heavy. With this is mind, Bryson advises drivers to give themselves some extra time, or consider taking a different route to get to your destination.
Bryson said since Southfield Road will not be closed completely, no detours will be posted. However, to avoid expected long delays, he suggests taking either Evergreen Road or Greenfield Road as alternates.
Bryson said told WWJ that, along with the repaving, this project also includes making improvements to several SMART bus stops.
"That typically includes new pads; and we work with SMART to see what they want there," Bryson said. "I'm not sure if they're adding new benches or anything like that, but there certainly will be new cement pads to improve the bus stops, and make sure that access to them is good."
Bryson said curbs, gutters and select side-street approaches will also be rebuilt.
This project will surely be an inconvenience, he said, but it will be short term pain for long term gain."
