SOUTHGATE (WWJ) An officer-involved shooting in Southgate left a man dead, according to police.
Southgate Police said the shooting happened in the parking lot of the Meijer on Fort Street near Leroy, on Saturday, June 27 shortly before 3:30 p.m.
Authorities said Southgate Police officers stopped a man and a woman for allegedly shoplifting. At some point, the man pulled a "sharp instrument" on the officers.
The Southgate officer then shot the man once, according to police.
First responders rushed the man to the hospital where he later passed away. His name was not released.
Officers took the woman into custody.
The department placed the Southgate officer on administrative leave. Michigan State Police are leading the investigation.
