(WWJ) – Registration for the next round of the Sterling Heights Police Department's Citizens Police Academy is now open.
The academy, which started several years ago, gives residents and those with ties to the city a chance to experience and learn about the department's operations, including the Special Response Team (SWAT), tasers, evidence technicians, forensic Investigations, and a trip to the shooting range.
This year's academy – a 10-week program – will meet once a week for three hours, beginning on Jan. 4. Anyone over 18 years old is eligible to join.
Questions and class interaction are encouraged in the relaxed atmosphere because it humanizes the officers, allowing the class to see who is behind the badge.
WWJ's Erin Vee spoke with Sgt. Aaron Susalla about the academy and what those who attend can expect. He says he's had whole families participate, those who are interested in a possible career in law enforcement, and he even had a couple use the class as a "date night."

Susalla says the classes teaching drunk driving procedures are a fan favorite, as well as trips to the gun range and visits from the K-9 unit.
More information on the academy can be found on the Sterling Heights website and those interested can email Sgt. Susalla at asusalla@sterling-heights.net to sign up!
