COMMERCE TWP. (WWJ) -- Authorities say a Sterling Heights man was drunk and speeding when he caused a three-car crash that killed a Waterford Township man in September.
Kevin Joseph Koldys, 51, was arraigned in 52-1 District Court Friday on one count of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death — a felony charge that is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Koldys was driving a 2021 Lexus RC northbound on M-5 on Sept. 5, when the car veered off the roadway, traveling several hundred feet through tall grass and weeds.
The Lexus then re-entered the roadway, jumped the curb in a roundabout, and crashed into a 2017 Chevy Trax, driven by 30-year-old Matthew John Szakal of Waterford.
The collision pushed Szakal’s vehicle into a 2021 Honda CRV, driven by a 64-year-old Wixom woman.
Szakal was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriffs' office.
Koldys was seriously hurt, officials said, and the Wixom woman suffered minor injuries.
The sheriff's office said "excessive speed and alcohol use" by Koldys are believed have been factors in the crash.
On Friday, a District Court magistrate set a $25,000 bond for Koldys, who is being held in the Oakland County Jail.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 30.
