FRENCHTOWN TWP. (WWJ) - A stolen vehicle has been recovered and the suspect is in custody, the Monroe County Sheriff said.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 12:20 a.m. A Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy saw a black Chrysler 300 with an improper plate. The vehicle was driving on North Monroe Street near Mall Road in Frenchtown Township, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle pulled into a nearby parking lot and the driver, who was reported as the only occupant, went into a nearby business.

The deputy checked the VIN on the vehicle, at which point it was discovered that it was reported stolen by the Detroit Police Department, the statement said.

When deputies went into the business to find the suspect, they were told by witnesses that he had allegedly left out the back door. A perimeter was set up in the area to stop the suspect from leaving.

Another deputy saw a “suspicious vehicle” leaving the area a short time later. The vehicle was stopped by authorities at Mall Road and North Telegraph Road.

The suspect who was driving the stolen vehicle earlier was found in the backseat. Authorities said he was picked up by the second car after calling someone for a ride. He was identified and taken into custody.

The suspect, a 29-year-old man from Monroe, is being held at the Monroe County Jail for “possession of a stolen vehicle,” the statement said.

The investigation is ongoing.
