TROY (WWJ) –- A 25-year-old Detroit man is hospitalized after being shot by a Troy Police officer on Tuesday, while allegedly trying to flee a traffic stop in a stolen car.
The shooting happened at around 3:20 p.m. in the area of Rochester and Big Beaver Rd., leaving eastbound Big Beaver closed in the area as police investigated.
Troy police told WWJ that officers were alerted to a vehicle that had been stolen from a dealership and tried to make a traffic stop on the vehicle on eastbound Big Beaver, just west of Daley. While the vehicle was stopped at a light, officers tried to box in the stolen vehicle.
That's when the driver allegedly "began to ram his way out," and then "drove straight at an officer who had exited his vehicle to make an arrest," the Troy PD said, in an updated news release Wednesday.
Police said the officer then opened fire, shooting five rounds from his service weapon — striking the driver in the upper body one time.
The suspect vehicle continued a short distance before crashing into another vehicle.
Officers began rendering aid as the suspect was taken into custody. A passenger in the car, idenied as 20-year-old Detroit man, was also arrested.
The driver was taken to a hospital where he remains in stable condition, awaiting an arraignment on expected chargers.
The passenger was treated for minor injuries police said he sustained while the suspect tried to ram his way out of the vehicle stop.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office was has been asked to complete the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
