DEARBORN (WWJ) — A large stray dog is on the mend after being brought to a Dearborn animal shelter in rough shape.
Dearborn Animal Control brought a "severely matted, soaking wet large dog" to Friends For Animals on Friday. The dog weighed 11 lbs. And had a chain collar matted in his fut, officials with the rescue organization said.
The dog was immediately shaved down by the medical team, where he "proved to be very calm and gentle." The dog, determined to be heartworm positive, had no microchip, so little information is known about his history.
Medical technician Tiffany Hamilton said the dog — later named Reggae — quickly warmed up to his new surroundings after being shaved.
"To be in the condition he was in, at his age, it would appear he probably has never been groomed before," Hamilton said. "He remained calm and tolerant throughout the entire process of shaving over 11 lbs. of heavy, wet and matted hair off of him."
"Watching his personality blossom afterwards has been amazing," she added.

Friends For Animals President and CEO Cory Keller said this isn't the first case of neglect the shelter has seen this year.
"Luckily in Reggae's case, he was brought to us so we can provide him the necessary support and medical care to ensure he can get the second chance he deserves," Keller said. "We all love animals, as they provide so much love, and companionship, but they are a responsibility. They require proper food and water, a warm home to live in, and necessary medical care so they can remain healthy. Reggae, just like other dogs we have seen this year, did not need to suffer like this."
Friends For Animals says there are many resources available both in the community and online for pet owners who have fallen on hard times or are in need of assistance.
"If anyone needs help, please reach out. We may be able to help or at the very least refer to organizations that can also help you," Keller said.
Anyone who would like to make a donation for Reggae or any of the other 2,500 animals the shelter cares for each year can do so on the Friends For Animals website.
Officials didn't specify whether Reggae will be up for adoption.
