SOUTHGATE (WWJ) - Authorities say a middle school student "maliciously and intentionally" trigged an emergency alert system during a Downriver middle school wrestling match, causing a brief scare on Tuesday evening.
The Southgate Police Department said in an update on Wednesday, Feb. 7, that there was never an active assailant during the incident that unfolded just after 5 p.m. the day before at Davidson Middle School in Southgate.
According to authorities, a smart boot activation was triggered during a wrestling match at the school. Southgate police officers responded to the scene where they met with school security.
Security told police that a student attending the match had "maliciously and intentionally" triggered the alert system.
The student was identified and removed from the property, the department added.
"Additionally, the Southgate Police Department would like to inform the public that intentionally triggering a false activation of this system is a crime, and will not be tolerated," officials said in a prepared statement. "All violations of this system will be forwarded to the prosecutors office."
The department reiterated that there was never any threat to the school. The case is being forwarded to the prosecutor's office for review.
