(WWJ) An Oakland County jury has convicted a substitute teacher on six counts of criminal sexual conduct.

The Oakland County Prosecutor's office charged Timothy Allen Daugherty, 61, last October after several students at Spring Mills Elementary School in Highland Township accused him of touching them inappropriately.

The girls were between the ages of nine and eleven.

“Timothy Daugherty victimized the children he was supposed to nurture and protect,” said Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a statement. “Parents expect schools to be a safe place for their children and children should never have to fear their own teachers. Coming forward is never easy for victims, especially children. Thanks to them, Daugherty won’t be able to harm another student.”

Daugherty will be sentenced June 24th.  He faces up to 15 years in prison on each count.

A civil lawsuit is expected to be filed against Daugherty by attorney Ven Johnson, who represents as many as a dozen families. Court proceedings in the the civil case are likely to begin next year.
