(WWJ) — A Michigan man is in police custody after allegedly fleeing police in a stolen car until he ran out of gas in Monroe County.

It all began around 10 a.m. Monday when the Monroe County Sheriff's Department got a call from the Detroit Police Auto Theft Unit reporting they were following a Jeep headed south on I-75 in Frenchtown Township.

The sheriff's office says deputies spotted the stolen 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk in the area of Nadeau Road and tried to stop the driver, but he refused to stop and continued to speed away.

Deputies initiated a chase and continued following the Jeep, which got off the freeway at South Otter Creek Road.

Authorities say the suspect, later identified as a 24-year-old Onsted man, continued to flee until running out of gas on Telegraph Road, south of Sterns Road in Bedford Township.

The driver and two passengers — a 20-year-old Walled Lake man and a 21-year-old man from Detroit — were all arrested without incident after running out of gas.

The driver is being held at the Monroe County Jail on charges of fleeing and eluding, and receiving and concealing stolen property.

The two other men were released at the scene, pending prosecutor review. None of the suspects' names have been released.
