(WWJ) Detroit Police investigators have identified and arrested a suspect in the shooting of half-a-dozen people outside a banquet hall on the city's east side.
The shooting happened at the Chalmers Banquet Hall on Chalmers near E. Outer Drive at around 2 a.m.
One person was shot and killed, with five others injured when someone in a vehicle driving by opened fire. Detectives marked at least 20 bullet casings at the scene.
Announcing developments in the case, Interim Detroit Police Chief James White said this was not a random shooting.
"We believe this is a known suspect and a target victim, a targeted victim," White told reporters. "So the community is not at risk. This was some type of conflict between the two parties involved."
White said the business should not have been open to begin with, as it has not been properly licensed since 2013.
Family members told WWJ's Charlie Langton the man who died was 28 years old and was in a wheelchair from a prior gunshot wound.
Five other victims — two men and three women — were were being treated for injuries at a local hospital and are expected to recover.
White credited "relentless efforts" by investigators, along with support from the community for the arrest, Tuesday afternoon.
"Speaking up is absolutely the right thing to do." White said.
The suspect's name is being withheld as he awaits charges by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
Police are looking for a second suspect still at large.
