CHIPPEWA COUNTY (WWJ) - A man who allegedly shot a federal agent while attempting to rescue two endangered children from a home in the Upper Peninsula has died.
After an overnight standoff with federal and local authorities, Giovanni McNab was found dead in the home Thursday, while the two children were unharmed and were placed into custody of Child Protective Services.
The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office said earlier Thursday a U.S. marshal assisting other federal and state authorities with a special operation was shot Wednesday morning by a suspect in Goetszille, about 25 miles northeast of Les Cheneaux in the eastern U.P.
"Federal authorities say a special operations team attempted to recover two endangered children and arrest McNab when the suspect left the residence, shot at officers and fled back inside," the sheriff's office said.
McNab had been wanted in Missouri on charges of abduction and parental kidnapping.
The injured marshal was airlifted to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, where they were said to be in stable condition.
A standoff between authorities and McNab continued overnight into Thursday morning where residents in Goetzville, Stalwart and Pickford were warned they would see a large police presence in the area.
Officials announced around 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 10 that they were able to secure the location and confirmed there was no threat to the public.
Because the investigation is ongoing, no additional details can be made public at this time, the sheriff's office said.
