DETROIT (WWJ) - A suspect is dead and a Michigan State Police trooper is recovering after an exchange of gunfire on Detroit's west side Friday night.
It all unfolded just before 8 p.m. along M-10 the Lodge freeway near Wyoming Ave. MSP officials say it started as a traffic stop. The trooper and suspect got into a fight after the suspect, a 41-year-old Highland Park man, got out of his truck.
The man fired multiple shots at the trooper, hitting him twice in his bulletproof vest and once in the shoulder.
The trooper returned fire, hitting and killing the suspect. MSP Director Colonel James Grady II says the bulletproof vest saved the trooper's life.
Detroit police officers rushed the trooper to the hospital, where he is said to be in stable condition.
Authorities have not said what caused the incident to escalate or what prompted the traffic stop.
The incident remains under investigation.
