DETROIT (WWJ) -- A suspect is now in custody in connection with a shooting that injured a 17-year-old boy and a 22-year-old woman as this year's Detroit fireworks show was about to begin.

Detroit Police say Alphonso Cooper, Jr., 19, was arrested at a Washtenaw County home Monday afternoon by members of the Fugitive Apprehension Services Team (FAST) / Violent Crime Reduction Initiative (VCRI).

According to Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison, the double shooting happened just after 10 p.m. on June 23, in the area near Randolph and Larned streets. That's about a block away from the Spirit of Detroit Plaza and Hart Plaza where people were gathered to watch the fireworks.

Bettison said Cooper, a Romulus resident, got into argument with another young person over a $200 debt. It's alleged Cooper pulled out a gun and fired two shots.

The two victims were taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries, as police said Cooper Jr. ran off with a friend (seen in photos released by the DPD).

Bettison said the gunfire caused people to panic and run, but there were no additional injuries.

In a statement released Monday, Bettison said he's confident that Cooper Jr. is the person who fired the shots.

"Our officers have worked countless hours on this investigation to ensure that we brought the individual responsible for the fireworks shooting into custody," the chief said. "I want to thank the community for all the tips, along with my officers and all of our law enforcement partners who assisted in this process."

Details on the charges and court dates for Cooper Jr. were not immediately released.
