MADISON HEIGHTS (WWJ) An officer-involved shooting in Madison Heights left a suspect in critical condition, police said.
Madison Heights Police said they received reports of shots fired behind a home on Brettonwoods Street, in the area of 11 Mile and Stephenson Highway, on Friday, July 25 around 8:15 p.m.
Madison Heights and Royal Oak officers set a perimeter and found the suspect behind the home— possibly breaking in while residents were inside, according to police.
“The subject, who was holding a handgun, was ordered multiple times to drop the gun, but the subject failed to comply,” Madison Heights Police said in their statement. “The subject then pointed the handgun in the direction of officers.”
Police said one officer fired a department handgun, “striking the subject multiple times.”
Officers attempted to render aid to the person and rushed them to the hospital. They are in critical but stable condition.
A .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol and spent shell casings were found at the scene, police said.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Madison Heights will be conducting a criminal investigation.
No officers or civilians were injured in this incident, according to police.
“There is no threat to the public at this time,” police said.
