(WWJ) A suspect was killed during a confrontation with members of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force Detroit (DEA) late last month. Garden City Police are now releasing the details.

Garden City Police say a woman walked into the Garden City Police Station just after 1:15 a.m. on February 24, saying she had been a victim of a "violent domestic assault" at her home.

Though she had escaped, she still feared for her life because the man continued to threaten her by telephone, according to police.

The victim identified the suspect as Alonte Damar Murphy. She was transported to the hospital in unknown condition.

Garden City Police began searching for Murphy, who had several active warrants out for his arrest. They were able to obtain a search warrant, which allowed them to search the home.

While police have not released the location of the home, WDIV-Channel 4 reports it's on Pardo Street in the area of Ford and Merriman.

Members of the DEA task force assisted in the investigation. At approximately 5 p.m. that same day; just before the search; Murphy pulled up to the house in a car.

Garden City Police say a DEA task force member made contact with Murphy in front of the home.

He was armed with a semi-automatic handgun and exchanged multiple rounds with DEA task force members, according to police. Several bullets struck a police vehicle where an officer was seeking cover.

After the gunfire, police realized Murphy was injured. They administered first aid. He was rushed to a hospital where he died.

He was 22 years old, according to WDIV-Channel 4.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office hit Murphy with the following charges related to the domestic assault before he died: Assault With Intent To Do Great Bodily Harm Less Than Murder, Assault With A Dangerous Weapon, Weapons Offense-Felony Firearm, Domestic Assault Aggravated.

The Michigan State Police Department is conducting an independent investigation into Murphy's death in accordance with the Garden City Police Department's Policy.
