DETROIT (WWJ) - State police investigating an early Tuesday morning crash on northbound M-10 in Detroit said gunfire erupted at the scene between two drivers.

Troopers confirmed shots were fired just before 5 a.m. after a man reported an armed altercation with another driver along the Lodge Freeway near the Wyoming exit.

State police were out at the scene before sunrise as they conducted an investigation around a lone, crashed vehicle on the Lodge Freeway.

According to police, the preliminary findings revealed the victim was traveling northbound on M-10 when he suddenly noticed a stopped Chrysler 200 blocking lanes in the freeway from a crash.

The driver swerved to avoid hitting the Chrysler, but ended up swiping the driver's side door which was reportedly open at the time.

Police say the victim pulled over to the check on the occupants in the Chrysler when he was confronted for hitting their car.

"An altercation took place between the victim and the Chrysler driver, when the passenger of the Chrysler pulled a black semi-automatic pistol," troopers said. "He pointed it at the victim threatening to end his life. The victim fled back to his vehicle when he heard two shots."

Police said the victim went home and reported the incident to police.

Troopers conducted a video canvass for evidence as the left two lanes were blocked due to the Chrysler which was seemingly abandoned underneath the Greenlawn overpass, WWJ's Mike Campbell reported.

Earlier reports said the driver of the abandoned Chrysler fled the scene and climbed up an embankment. Police were seen up on the northbound Service Drive, facing southbound looking around, Campbell said.
