DETROIT (WWJ) – A suspect is reportedly in critical condition after being hit by a car on I-94 while fleeing police Monday afternoon.
A 25-year-old man who was wanted for stealing from a convenience store allegedly resisted police and then ran in front of traffic on I-94 near Gratiot while trying to escape, according to a report from Fox 2 in Detroit.
Police officials say the suspect hopped a fence and ran onto the freeway, according to the report.
An officer chasing the man said the driver "had no chance" to avoid hitting the suspect, according to the report.
The suspect was reportedly taken to a hospital with critical injuries.
No other information has been released.
The incident left the freeway shut down for several hours, causing major backups for drivers in the area.
