DETROIT (WWJ) A suspected drunk driver was arrested after causing a crash that injured three on Detroit’s northwest side, police said.
Michigan State Police (MSP) said the crash happened on northbound M-10 The Lodge at Hamilton Avenue on Saturday, July 26, around 2:55 a.m.
According to MSP; a Troy man, 38, was speeding in the center lane when he rear-ended another car.
Authorities said the impact forced the driver of the second car to lose control and strike the concrete wall. The car overturned “multiple times,” ejecting the backseat passenger. The passenger sustained a “severe” leg injury and troopers applied a tourniquet at the scene.
Troopers caught up with the at-fault driver and noticed signs of impairment, according to MSP.
An on-scene investigation led to his arrest. Troopers administered a blood draw to test for the presence of alcohol in his system. They then took him into custody.
All three passengers of the second car were rushed to the hospital and treated for "non-life-threatening injuries," MSP said.
The freeway was closed for approximately two hours for cleanup.
“Unfortunately, we still see drivers who risk the lives of others by driving impaired,” First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said. “The crash also serves as a reminder to wear a seatbelt, no matter where you are seated. A seatbelt will keep you inside the vehicle and help avoid serious injuries or death.”
