Suspected drunk driver kills 1, injures another after slamming into tow truck on New Year's Day in Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - One person is dead and another is injured after police say a suspected drunk driver slammed into a tow truck on Detroit's east side on Monday morning.
Detroit police said a male driver in his 40s was arrested in connection to the fatal crash which occurred just before 5:20 a.m. on January 1st in the area of Young and Hayes streets.
According to investigators, a tow truck was assisting a customer with their vehicle when a Chevrolet Tahoe plowed into the tow truck.
The victim, a 26-year-old man getting his car towed, was standing next to his vehicle when the Tahoe crashed and killed him. His identity has not been released.
Police also confirmed the tow truck driver was injured in the wreck and was taken to a local hospital. He was last said to be in temporary serious condition.
No other details were released, although investigators did say they believed the driver of the Tahoe was under the influence at the time of the crash.
An investigation into the incident remains active at this time with the results of a toxicology report currently pending, police said. No other details were provided.
